Valentine’s Day is a widely celebrated holiday, but did you know that here in Wales, we take things a step further by embracing the spirit of love twice a year? Yes, really!
Dydd Santes Dwynwen, a.k.a., the Welsh Valentine’s Day is the lesser-known but equally heartwarming celebration of love, which unfolds three whole weeks before the festivities of St. Valentine!
For those of you who don’t know, Dydd Santes Dwynwen revolves around its own patron saint – the enchanting Saint Dwynwen, a 4th-century princess renowned for her beauty as the daughter of King Brychan. Echoing the traditions of St. Valentine’s Day, this Welsh celebration, held annually on the 25th of January, is marked by the exchange of cards and thoughtful gifts, bringing people closer together.
This year is gearing up to be an extra special celebration as Hog Roast Dolwen takes the reins of a community event. The romance festival, organised by event planners, Dawn and Natalie, promises a delightful immersion into Welsh culture and traditions, with one highlight being a crafting workshop where attendees will have the opportunity to carve their own wooden love spoons.
There will also be plenty of market stalls for punters to browse, whisky and gin tents, plus fairground rides and games to keep the kids entertained.
And, to ensure the guests’ bellies remain full throughout the celebrations, Hog Roast Dolwen is set to delight attendees with our Classic Hog Roast Menu. Just imagine: a full-size hog, slow-roasted to perfection and served on gluten-free buns with sage and onion stuffing, crispy crackling, and a blob of applesauce. You can’t beat it!
Recognising the diverse dietary preferences of the community, Hog Roast Dolwen will also be presenting one of our highly-praised plant-based alternatives. Our sumptuous BBQ-pulled jackfruit rolls dressed in crunchy coleslaw will provide a delectable option for those with strict dietary requirements.
Our catering manager, Brad, and the rest of the Hog Roast Dolwen gang can hardly wait to help locals celebrate this historic event. So, be sure to mark your calendars and join us for a double dose of love as we celebrate Dydd Santes Dwynwen!
